Network briefing - 'Stop dithering and start building'

The focus on speeding up housebuilding continues unabated. The government’s housing white paper has a chapter devoted to it. This builds on previous announcements such as Let’s Get Britain Building. There have also been numerous studies on this topic including the Elphicke House Report and the Local Government Association Housing Commission.

So, we are not short of ideas! Are we all to blame? More importantly, what are we going to do about it? According to Tim Roache, General Secretary of the GMB Union, as quoted in the Guardian Housing Network article on the Government’s Housing White Paper on 7 February 2017, we should ‘stop dithering and start building.’

The aims of this briefing paper, therefore, are to focus on delivering housing projects by summarising approaches for speeding up housebuilding, highlighting their challenges and opportunities especially the strategic enabling role of councils, emphasising the importance of understanding the development process and focusing on the neglected topic of project management.
